Summer Communications (June 25, 2020)

Hello MGSD families!

We hope you all are enjoying your summer and this beautiful weather!  Please look over today’s information carefully, and be sure to check out the summer learning resources for our students to help them stay on track!

Summer Learning Resources

With the last quarter of the school year being truncated due to COVID-19, we realize our teachers and students may not have been able to focus on all of the skills they might normally. Our curriculum team has prepared activities for all levels to help our students stay sharp over this summer break.  We hope that in between regular summer activities, our students will also practice these essential skills and come back ready and excited to learn. Many of you may already have utilized these resources via your school’s website; however, we thought it might be nice to remind all of our parents again.  Please click on the link for your child’s grade level below to access these great resources!

NC School Restart Plan

The state has made revisions to the StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit for K-12 schools since we last shared.  This toolkit lays out a comprehensive set of requirements and recommendations that all public schools must follow to minimize #COVID19 exposure for students, staff and families.  Most revisions deal with the wearing of masks.  Please see page five for more details:  StrongSchoolsNC.  We will be sharing more information next Wednesday, July 1, after the state announces the option schools will reopen under on August 17.

School Nutrition Information

As a reminder, our district is still providing hot meals for pickup at South Elementary School for any child age 0 through 18.  Meals can be picked up Monday through Thursday from 11:00am until 1:00pm.

Information about Early Head-Start From I-CARE

I-CARE, Inc. will now be able to offer free child care services to low-income families who have children ages 1 & 2 year old. They have slots available at both the Southeast location (230 Adams Street, Statesville) & Mooresville location (219 W Mills Ave., Mooresville). They are accepting applications now for an expected start date of August 17, 2020. This program will provide comprehensive services modeled after their existing Head Start program. Key differences are this program will operate year round versus the school calendars they utilize for the Head Start program. Families will receive 6.5 hours of free care a day versus 6.25 hours Head Start children receive.  If you or someone you know could utilize these services, please access all information on the agency’s website at www.ICARE-inc.org.  Please note that this is not an MGSD program, we are sharing on behalf of I-CARE Iredell County.  Any questions will need to be directed to them at (704) 873-2858.
